Bad apples

They were the ones stealing jobs, lowering wages, living on benefits and putting pressure on the NHS. Following the Brexit vote, laws were being prepared to keep them out of the UK. Yet at the peak of the Covid pandemic, when all borders were closed, special flights were arranged to bring Eastern European workers back in to pick fruit and vegetables.

The 'Bad Apples' campaign focuses on the contribution of the so-called 'low skilled' workers from Eastern Europe who power the UK's construction, agriculture and food industries.

It celebrates their efforts, encouraging anyone who has been an outsider to claim their role in society and have their voice heard. The project features limited edition porcelain plates each designed with its own 'misfit' character. All proceeds are donated to the East European Resource Centre, helping migrants who experience poverty, exploitation and social exclusion.

All plates sold out in the first 3 days raising a total of £1308.

"We are very grateful for generosity of both the artists and the patrons who through buying plates contributed to our vital work. This donation allowed us to fully fund 120 hours of telephone isolation and check-up service and stay in touch with isolated, frail and homebound users in the darkest days of covid-19 pandemic, averted a couple suicidal attempts and maintained contact with 20 very vulnerable people who haven't left home since March 2020."
